Monogram 1/24 Scarab

Postby chrisguyw » Sun May 06, 2018 9:39 am

The Monogram 1/24 cars were far from my favourites when I was a young lad........while they could be made to run quite well , they were well off the pace of the Russkit's, Champions, Dynamics's of the time, and , while the Monograms' looked great, none of them ever made it into my slot box.

Fast forward a few years, and I did start to pick up a few of the cars that I did not have/want as a kid, and this monogram scarab is one of them.

It was built several years ago, and with a few chassis mods and some original formula Ortmann tires it goes really well on our club tracks.....in fact, it is much more at home on current "mid size" club tracks, than it ever was on the monster commercial tracks.

Cheers
Chris Walker

PS This one was done to replicate AJ's car from Mosport 1964.

Man, does your post hit home. I was serious as a 13-14 year old in 1966 and 7. I even held the track record on our 220 foot "LeMans" track for several days at our home joint with a scratchbuilt USRRC style Cooper. But show up with a Revell or Monogram hardbody, and were you ever in for it! Abuse and b***busting ensued.

The Scarabs had a mystique in the full sized world, and it's wonderful to see one. Could there be a more perfect color than yours, too?

Thanks!

Chris, you've done it again. Amazing work as usual. I recently purchased a vintage Monogram Riverside set that comes with the 1/24 McLaren Elva and Chaparral. I would like to detail the cars but I'm afraid of butchering it. If I can make them look a fraction as good as your work I will be overjoyed!

You mentioned the performance of Russkit and I think these were my favorites. I had the Lotus and the Porshe Carrera. They were quick and handled great!
