Tinkering again...

Postby olskoolslotz » Sat Feb 24, 2018 9:13 am

It's been a long time since I've posted or even pulled a controller trigger for that matter. But lately I've been digging through my piles and putting some stuff together for an upcoming slot car show. I've been enjoying the decompression time. Here's an MPC Mako Shark MKII I assembled this week, I was happy with the results and think this model looks good in gold color.

Nice Mako!
I am not usually a Corvette fan, but for some reason I have always liked that Mako Shark body. Maybe it's lower and meaner, the GS have always looked so tall to me?

In any event, pretty car!

MPC bodies had so much better detail than the Do-Bro (Du-Bro? I can't remember). You took advantage of that beautifully. I was amazed recently to find out how many Makos there were. A guy right here in town has the short, squatty one, and I never knew it existed.

Thanks for the comments and compliments. This car is all original 50 year old MPC components except for the reproduction wheel inserts. MPC made three different Mako Shark body styles that I'm aware of, the MK II, MK IV and rental car version. I've had multiples of all three, have sold several lately and have several more that I'm currently reconditioning to sell. Colors I've had are blue, gold, green, two different shades of red, root beer and turquoise. Still have examples of all of these.

Where I left off today, two MPC Mako Shark chassis' and turquoise bodies cleaned and ready to assemble. I should have taken a before photo, the body on the tech block was covered in decals & stickers and had red & silver paint stripes on it. About 1 1/2 hours of cleaning and it looks like new!

Those cars take me back to the '60s, I had several of those Mako Sharks, they were good runners. Notice the early silicone on sponge tires, I don't recall those working very well compared to solid silicone tires, but that sort of tire is used on T-Jet HO cars today. Another unusual feature of that car was working front brakes, with those skinny front tires that did not do much. The car had a lever arm with a weight at the end. When you hit the brakes the weight would swing forward and tighten up on some fishing line that was wrapped around the front axle. I added a home built version of the brake system to a Classic Manta Ray chassis with wide front tires and that worked quite well.

Those always were the most impressive scale cars in the vac formed group. Its like they went out of their way to do a great job on them.

Beautiful vintage racer, enjoy running it!
The slot car show you're getting ready for wouldn't happen to be the one at the Hilton Garden Hotel in Baltimore in a few weeks? If so, let me know, I'll be there vending HO and larger scale stuff along with my pal Bob "Mr. Aurora" Beers. We'll be arriving late Saturday afternoon. If you're gonna be there it would be cool to say hello.
Lemme know... Ernie :>)
