Monogram Scarab chassis

I bought the Scarab re-issue way back when. It's time to get it off the shelf and out of the box!

I'm trying to decide on a chassis. I don't want to spend a ton of money on an original. The Scarab is pretty narrow. Figuring out and soldering up a brass chassis is a thought. Adapting a Parma or some similar is another. Has anyone else built one of these? Pics available for inspiration?

Wheels and tires - I'm thinking K&B? There are lots of K&B wheels on eBay - anyone know if they all fit the Stock Car Special tires available through Paul Gage? Or maybe H&R with the model's inserts?

Any thought?

This may be easier said than done, but if you can get hold of Buzz Perri at Buzz-A-Rama in Brooklyn, NY (weekends ONLY), I know he has original MONOGRAM 1/24 chassis kits. We ran a vintage spec car race using them about a year ago. He's got 36D motors, gears, ect. to go with them, too. Tell him Ernie from Long Island sent ya, hopefully he doesn't bust your chops too much and will dig out what you need to make the sale. Good luck... Ernie :>)

I recently built a Tamiya lola T70 re-issue using the new AMT chassis. I cut a piece of brass plate to fit the bottom of it and it runs super. Given that the AMT chassis is a piece of c**p, it is about the only good use I've had for one. I drilled out all the axle holes and put 1/8 bushings in, drilled out the front amt wheels to 1/8 so I didn't have the use the easily bent amt axles. Converted to modern guide flag. I set it up with a Plafit Fox . It actually made a nice running car on the local commercial track. With less motor it would be good at home. It handles great.

I will give you an AMT frame.

I have played with a couple of them (the guide assembly mod is definitely a necessity!) - I am always interested to see what others have done with them! :D

I know it's a couple days late, but I've been busy, playing! Here's a pic of the AMT chassis under a Tamiya Lola T70, with the brass plate soldered to the bottom toactually make it strong and make it handle decent.

I went to the online editor and re-sized these pics, I think. I'll post them and we'll see what I actually did to them. The AMT chassis also has been drilled out for 1/8 inch axles. From the amt kit the axles are thrown away, the bushings thrown away, the guideflag and braids thrown away. Basically just kept the silver frame and soldered it all together. I kept the pinon gear and motor, which actually is a decent runner. This car has a Plafit motor. The AMT wheels and tires can be used if they are drilled out to 1/8 inch for a regular axle. That is the aluminum wheels from the second series. The push on plastic wheels in the first series kit and just for push toys and stuff. I might build a Monogram 2D using the same setup.
