Carrera's axles are knurled with the wheel pressed on. In a lot of cases you can pull the wheel off without breaking it but then your still stuck with axles that won't accept another wheel unless you somehow grind down the knurling. It's easier to replace the axle with the std 3/32 axle and use aluminum wheels. Paul Gage makes tires for both cars with the factory wheels.
Carrera made several different styles of wheels for the Mustang. (GT350 for one) The wheels come mounted on the axle so you can just swap out the whole assy. IF they are available you can just order them from a dealer. (Hardly anyone stocks axle sets)
