Late Model Body Project

Postby strangebrew » Sun Jan 27, 2019 1:01 pm

I'm staying "old school" for now as I think 3D printing is beyond my skill & wallet level.
Soooo....I'm still resin casting. :snooty:

Been working on this for a few weeks now.
My last dirt late model bodies were fun, but I thought I could do better.
The old ones were a bit heavy & "clunky" which I think made for kind of a "stiff" slot car.
My goal was to make a thinner, lighter casting in a few pieces to allow for more customization & flexibility.
I started from scratch & designed & built a prototype shooting for about a .030 thickness casting.
I didn't know if I could go that thin, but it was worth a try.
I widened the nose about 1/4" & the entire body about 1/8 " compared to the old one
It's about 1/16th shorter also.
I might have gone a bit too far, as the interior portion is so thin, it's nearly transparent & the sides are maybe .020".
The nose is still pretty substantial.
It has a horizontal piece cast horizontally across the underside to help keep the side panels from flexing too much...............I hope.

I may lower the driver compartment a little, because the roof I planned was to be lower, this one didn't quite clear the driver head  .
I have an air cleaner hood box mold also............I forgot to include it it the picture.
I plan to make a couple roof styles & maybe cast a replacement rear spoiler also.
I think before I run one of these I may glue a .010" piece of lexan inside the door panels & under the interior.
It should protect it from breaking & give it some flex......

I cleaned up the very 1st casting which has some minor flaws.
The next 2 castings are much better.
Stay tuned.....I'll build one up & see what happens next. :? :? :? :?

Staying old school I couldn’t agree more on the chassis side but we’re always looking for bodies keep up the good work :text-bravo:

Got a couple dirt late models done....
I'm using my home-cast resin chassis set up for 3 1/4" wheelbase with Jaws motors.
I put Pro-Track wheels & tires on one & PG urethanes on another.
I'll do some track testing later.

I tried using decals I already printed for the older style body & they don't fit the way I'd like.
This is the 1st one out of the mold & I had lots of issues figuring out how I wanted it to go together.
Not particularly happy with the outcome, but it's serviceable I guess.

Number 2 went together a bit better...........I learned from the mistakes of the 1st one ;) .
I lowered the driver a smidge & the roof also.
Trimmed a fraction from the bottom of the body too.............Need to go a little further yet.
But, all things considered, it's a better job than number one.
I adjusted the decal sheet a bit & reprinted it for this one. It fits a little better, but still not to my liking.

I can see this is not the final solution for a late model body.
I definitely need to address the roof issues, I'll have to come up with a better one.
I may make individual molds for the nose, roof & top half of the body
& just cut each side panel from styrene & fit it all together.
That would make replacement of individual parts easy.

Those look like they should be a lot of fun to race sir - and the details like the mud covers and cage inside the roof area are great details!
Bravo sir!
