The front bumper is left over from the frame rails :)

I sometimes use a lot of scrap that I have no part numbers for.

Well, been a week off from building but got it finished up this evening.

Image

Tires are Paul Gage customs he made for me and will have for sale soon I am sure. After removing the foams, I sanded the wheels with medium grit sandpaper to remove any excess glue/foam and to give something for the adhesive to bite into. I used clear nail polish. This works great as it gives you time to move the tire around to get it straight and true.

Inserts are from Big Donkey Resins. Decals are from Heller I have had for a long time. Just mix and match, nothing fancy on these old beaters. Champion driver bust repopped in resin, card stock tray interior, and plastic screen to finish it off. And yes, I sanded the car with heavy grit on purpose and only gave it one coat of black for effect. I wanted it to look rougher than a cob :)

Hawk 18K motor and wheel width set at 3 inches. Runs great! Little sanding needed but not much.

All in all a fun build. Hope some of you join in and start Jalopy building too.

Ok are we starting these again. We have some new members with some serious chassis building skills OOOOh Baby this gets my creative juices flowing again. I LOOOOVE these jalopies. Have an old cover girl I need to rebuild in on the short list. BUT I will build one of these soon. Got me a new fancy Weller iron and itchen to try her. I am going to go look for a body mow. Jim

Digging that build and the dirt track oval scene right now. Think I got everything but a body...time to learn that soldering. Any tips on paste n solder?

I use a 60/40 solder, usually no paste needed. Not as super strong as others, but it works well enough for me. if some nerf bars bend or break, I actually enjoy the look of it, and easy to repair.

flux it!

Postby SpeedyNH » Mon Jan 27, 2014 8:30 pm

60/40 lead/tin still works the best for me to this day, but it's not as easy to find any more. when you go to 63 the temp goes up and it turns brittle as well. the antimony solder is pretty useless, as far as i'm concerned. of course one does need a good mechanical joint as well. there is a limit to what 'glue' will do. it does rip. i always use a good flux to chemically clean the parts.
