65 Comet Cyclone Short tracker

Postby btaylor » Sun Mar 12, 2017 7:32 am

Decided to build this Moebius kit that I got from the General. I didn't have any short track racers yet, so I thought this one would be a good candidate. I started with the usual opening of the wheelwells, and set up an H&R chassis to fit the wheelbase.
Image
Then I sanded off all the side trim, and a adapted a hood scoop from the AMT 65 galaxie kit. That involved cutting up the old hood, and shortening and shaping the scoop to fit the smaller Comet hood. Then a coat of primer for getting it smooth.
Image
Decided on a two tone paint scheme, and used decals from many kits to come up with a fantasy livery.
Image
Built up a half tray interior mounted to the kit tub so I could mount the body.Driver figure is from an old Eldon Indy car cut up. roll bars from AMT 40 ford kit with added bars.
Image
Rear wing cut from sheet styrene, and added hood hinges from an old model kit for wing supports.
Image
I added wheel inserts from PPP, And finished her up for some track time.
Image
Just redone the rear rollbar supports, they looked bad! also added a riveted lexan rear window.
Image
Motor is A piranha from SCC, gearing is 9/33, The rear tires will be PG wide's for the h&r wheels. Should be a handful on the track, wich is what I wanted for this series. They were some bad boy cars to watch or race! hope you all like it!

You knocked this one out of the park!

These old Sportsman short trackers are indeed a blast to build and race.

That's it. One more cup of coffee and I'm heading to The SkunkWorks. Time for a excursion into the depths of The Abyss.

I'm drooling. It might be a fantasy livery but it's a real good fantasy to have. Spot on!

Wow, very cool... another FORD kit I'm gonna have to buy!
Maybe I can find a good price on one this coming Sunday (3/19) at the RTS Model Expo (formerly MassCar) in Taunton, MA.
Man - spendin' some of the vendor booth profits already! Nice work, and thanks for the photos. Enjoy! -- Ernie :>)
