This is a weird one. I had some Monogram midget racers (the re-issues) and thought it would be fun to build a few of them for a new series here at The speedway. I used a narrowed H&R Chassis, and all the model car goodies to be added. The track width is still great for my Track, and they clear the timing tower also! These should be a hoot, and just about anyone can build one from readily available parts.

Of course getting the bodies might be a bit of a trick.

Those old kits are readily available and you can build some neat cars with them.. Dynamic chassis work well under them, soldered up brass works fine. Even the old Womps can be cut up and used under them.

A very similiar car is the old Strombecker Dirt Track racer from the 60's. I used to make those bodies and built a few cars with them. You can get a nice resin of the dirt racer from Big Donkey. They are little smaller than the midget, but not much. The big Midget is called 1/18 scale and that is probably about right. Hard to beat the look of American open wheelers from the 40's thru the 60's.

These are some crusty old cars buit using the dirt tracker body.

Bob, They are Monogram re issue kits. They are all over Ebay, shop for the best price. I got them pretty cheap at $10. Not bad considering you get a driver figure and wheel inserts for the H&R wheels.

They used to race midgets on the banked oval track in the town next to where I grew up. Some great racing action from those cars and some wild on-track mishaps. Nothing rolls like a midget...........! Great idea to bring them back; looking forward to seeing the full fleet when you're done. Keep those progress pics coming!

Got the chassis about ready for paint. Cant decide on a good motor for these yet, they are going to be heavy when finished. Might go big on these? 41k? Still need to get a few sets of the PG Kurtis tires for the H&R wheels, but its looking pretty good so far, and a heck of a lot of fun to build!
