I run the tires over a sponge pad with alcohol. That "de-glazes" and cleans them very well and does not harm them over time.

The pinion gear might be split/cracked and causing excess noise. It is difficult to see this, but it is common.

I am thinking you might try the extra pinion that came with the car (if it did) and test the difference. These are 13 tooth pinion and the mesh were always better on the cars I swapped.
