The Roller Test Bench

The staff at Slot Car Corner and other advanced enthusiasts have been using this tool for a few years and they finally decided to offer it to the public. When it comes to special tools for this 1/32nd scale hobby, there is no shortage of them in my basement. And when a new one comes along? You can be sure I will get my hands on one sooner or later.

Intro Video With Simple Test

Question #1 – Is it a Dyno? NO.

That’s fine by me. I have no real need for it for my simple home racing. Besides, with a good power supply you can determine AMP draw easily enough and combined with wheel RPM gives you a very good idea about the performance. Or at least more than enough data for my own personal home racing.

The unit is custom made and very high quality. There is a voltmeter on the side that might come in handy if you are not using a power supply that provides output readings.

High quality banana plug connection wires included.

Question #2 – What can you do with it?

This is a troubleshooting bench. Some tasks it can accomplish:

  • Break-in motors
  • Break in gears (i.e. improve gear mesh)
  • Check for bent axles
  • Check for excessive rear bushing play (“slop”)
  • Check for out-of-round wheels and/or tires
  • Check for tires that are not seated on wheels properly
  • Examine drive train components while running (body off)
  • Check for body interference (body on) – simulate body roll by putting light pressure on different areas of the body
  • Check rear wheel RPM’s (requires non-contact tachometer which must be purchased separately)

I added two additional bar magnets to increase the strength of the bracket. Some cars with bad vibrations or more powerful motors might move the bracket. These solve that.

It also fits some 1/24 models depending on wheelbase. This is WITHOUT modifying the unit.

If you want, you can lengthen the slot to make it accommodate even longer models such as H&R 1/24.

I trimmed the slot to lengthen and it accommodated an H&R Chassis set at standard 4 1/2 inch wheelbase.

Overall I am very pleased with the unit. Very well made and really helps me inspect my models with a more detailed approach. I need all the help I can get and it was well worth the investment.
